Looe Holidays Breaks Diving Beaches Polperro Looe Cornwall UK

Looe and the surround villages - particularly Polperro and Polruan - make superb Cornwall holiday and weekend leisure bases. The south west coast path along this stretch of the Cornish coast is glorious and there's a choice of superb family beaches in the area offering both wide sandy beaches, rock pools and hidden cove beaches.

A choice of water sports are available in and around Looe including sailing, fishing trips, pleasure boat trips for biirdwatching on Looe Island, and the Looe coast is particularly popular with diving and scuba diving. There are a large number of wrecks in the area. Looking for leisure on the water? Head for Looe!

Looe & Polperro Beaches

The range of family holiday beaches both to the east and west of Looe are one of the key attractions pulling holidaymakers towards the area. East Looe beach near the town centre is one of the most popular wide sandy family beaches in the area. It's framed by the Bango Pier to the west and a rocky outcrop to the east, making it nice and sheltered. Plenty of amenities close to hand in Looe town centre, plus toilets adjacent. A good all round Cornwall family holiday beach!

Visitors should note that Looe Harbour and river is out of bounds for swimming. Looe is a busy harbour and the river is well used by dinghy sailing and the like, so swimming in these areas is extremely dangerous. For East Looe Beach park up at the West Looe mammoth car park - the beach and harbour are within easy walking distance from here. No dogs are allowed on East Looe beach.

Over on the West side of Looe discover beautiful West Looe and Hannafore beach. This beach, also a great family haunt, is a shingle beach full of rock pools to keep the kids busy! Come to this beach for the best views of Looe Island. Marine Drive runs all the way along the coast, and at the far end there's a cafe, various hotels and access to the coast path and walks towards Talland Bay, Polperro and Polruan. For more information on other glorious beaches in the area including Tolland Bay, Whitsand Bay, Lantivet Bay and Lantic bay and Plaidy Beach check the Looe Beaches weblink right.

Looe Island

There's quite a few tales across Cornwall of inspiring women who have done something unusual and daring. The story of Looe Island contains another of these stories to rank up there with Rowena Cade and the Minack Theatre. The Atkins sisters Babs and Evelyn bought Looe Island back in 1965 and lived there alone up until their recent deaths. The island was left by Babs to the Wildlife Trust and is now a protected bird sanctuary. You'll find regular boat trips to Looe Island on East Looe Quay.

Polperro Tourist Information

Move along the coast from Looe to pretty Polperro with it's fascinating Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing, situated on the Warren overlooking the harbour. Contraband goods were smuggled from Guernsey particularly through Polperro during the 18th century. Smuggling was big business round these parts, and the heritage museum here at Polperro is one of the best on smuggling history.

Polperro Harbour is smaller than Looe's and not so active. The village is simply stunning, with a selection of great beaches plus beautiful cliff top coastal walking.

Check the Polperro weblink right for more details. Polperro, along with Looe, holds a festival annually in June. If pretty fisherman cottage retreats are your bag, along with coastal walking, great real ale pubs and seafood then head for Polperro and Looe - both great romantic retreats out of peak season too!

Polperro Heritage Museum is open daily between 10am and 6pm from March until October. For information and party bookings telephone 01503 272423
