As with many festivals this superb Celtic music and dance festival held annually every October in Perranporth originates from the work and dedication of one individual - in this case Betty Pitman. Indeed this Celtic festival is also fondly known as Bettyfest, and has been going strong since the end of the 1970s.
A superb choice of Celtic and Cornish music, dance, heritage walks, theatre and craft and Celtic memorabilia are all on the menu at this renowned Celtic festival. The festival also received a great boost from the support of the St Piran Trust and the abundance of Cornish heritage and sites in the area around the myth of St Piran.
The Lowender Peran Celtic Festival held at the end of October annually in Perranporth is one of the best Celtic festivals and local things to do, it's certainly one of the most renowned Cornish Celtic Festivals. On the programme are an array of Celtic and Cornish activities including concerts, Ceilis, dance displays, workshops and explorations of the Cornish Language, pipers, a Celtic Craft Market, street dancing, costumed pageant, theatre, story telling, and general workshops on dialect and the Cornish Language. It's a marvellous event, and a superb introduction into ancient Cornish heritage, and Celtic traditions and history.
A highlight of this Perranporth Celtic Festival is the Gwary Dons, a dance spectacular extraordinaire! This extravaganza collection of Celtic dances has been included in the Lowender Peran since it began. Visitors can expect evening concerts too with choirs, pipe bands, folk groups, rock bands and dance groups all strutting their stuff. Raccas are also a popular feature and are basically meal time entertainment with minstrels. The `Celtic Cafe` base of the festival is the Sunset Bar, with the Watering Hole venue on the beach featuring heavily in the festival. A great beach venue, the Watering Hole serves excellent bar food, plus is CAMRA recognised for it's great choice of Real Ales.
