Perranporth is another renowned beach for surfing and an indication of it's established surfing reputation lies in the fact that one of the oldest surfing clubs in the UK is located here in Perranporth. Why do surfers love Perranporth? Quite simply because Ligger or Perran Bay is absolutely hammered by Atlantic rollers - and the hammering is pretty consistent as well! One of the best spots for surfing on Ligger Bay is at Penhale Sands at the northern end.
Perranporth's other attractions are obvious. It's not just the surfing that's good, the beaches have real character, backed on as they are by caves and sand dunes with some fascinating rock features on the beach. Once predominated by fishing and tin mining, Perranporth is now a well equipped resort with ample beach shops, inns, guesthouses and urr bungalows as famously bemoaned about by John Betjamin!
Perranporth beach is particularly recommended to beginner or intermediate surfers, and it's great length (3 miles) means it's much quieter here than the crowded Newquay surfing beaches. Check out the definitive A1 surfing info link to the right on Perranporth surfing conditions, with daily surf cam. Penhale is the favourite surfing spot on the bay, with 'long walling rights'. Waves get upto 6ft here.
Head to Bathsheba Surf School for your surf lessons, conveniently located on Beach Road right near Perranporth's beaches. The Perranporth Surf School offering lessons for all surfing abilities operates both from Bathsheba or from Alcatraz it's other meeting point. Check their web link to the right for surf lesson details! Perranporth Beach is lifeguarded from May to October, and you need to pay attention to beach safety here as Perranporth beach is known for it's currents, quicksand and powerful incoming waves along it's 3 mile stretch. If it's a red flag it's a no go and never swim. For excellent advice on beach safety it's well worth perusing the RNLI Beach Safety website (link to the right) before your visit to the North Cornwall Coast.
The FLAGS safety code runs like so: F - Find the red and yellow flags and swim between them, L - Look at the safety signs, A - Ask a lifeguard for advice, G - Get a friend to swim with you and S - Stick your hand in the air and shout for help if in difficulty. Abide by it, and all will be well. Lifeguards are there for a reason on North Cornwall's beaches!
