Constantine & Harlyn Bay & Padstow Beaches
Around Padstow Bay is some of the best Cornwall surfing beaches, and at the top of the surfing tree sits particularly Constantine Bay. Backed on by sand dunes and framed by a rocky reef on it's south side, this Cornwall surfing beach takes two different shapes at low and high tides. At low tide it connects with it's sister beach, Booby's Bay, creating a long sandy bay (over half a mile of sand) whereas at high tide it's a shelving beach. Access to Booby's to the north is from Constantine at low tide, or via a path near the golf course. Surfers can expect some serious rips at Constantine Bay.
It's lifeguarded through peak season, so be aware of the flag warnings. If it's out, head for more sheltered Harlyn Bay. Facilities are excellent on this beach, particularly for surfers. Car parking, toilets, a surf shop (Constantine Bay Surf Store) are all here, plus Constantine Bay is a dog friendly beach. Check the A1 surfing link to the right for surf details, plus webcam! Pubs, restaurants and cafes are all nearby at St Merryn particularly, and of course all the facilities at Padstow are on your doorstep. Particular nightlife haunts favs for surfers include the Dog House in St. Merryn, the Cornish Arms, also in St. Merryn, PB's Bar in Higher Harlyn, the Jolly Roger on Carnevas campsite and Windy's 'Waves' restaurant at Higher Harlyn. No problem with accommodation choice locally too, with ample campsites, B&B guesthouses and self catering available near Constantine Bay!
For a more sheltered beach, with a gentler surf choose Harlyn Bay, situated on the eastern side of Trevose Head. It's where the surfers head if conditions are too rough at Constantine. The headland shelters Harlyn nicely, and it's a stunning Cornwall beach with nearly a mile of mixed sand and pebbles, with sand dunes backing onto the beach. Harlyn Village is also conveniently adjacent with all it's facilities, plus Haryln Bay is fully equipped with toilets, car parking, a cafe, a shop and a pub situated just across from the beach.
Harlyn Bay is an award winning Cornwall beach for cleanliness, picking up tidy beach awards! It's a dog friendly beach, but you need to keep your dog under control and clean up the mess. Of particular interest just behind the beach are discovered remains of an Iron Age cemetery. Harlyn Surf School is conveniently nearby for surf lessons, plus this beach is lifeguarded in peak season. An excellent choice of amenities and facilities are at nearby St Merryn. Check the A1 surf low-down to the right.
Padstow Bay Surf Schools

Rock & Polzeath
Padstow Bay, what with it's superb location next to some of the best Cornwall surfing beaches, plus all things Rick Stein in Padstow, and numerous other chic eating houses, is fast becoming the place to the seen. The twin resorts of Rock and Polzeath, with their growing popularity are two of the areas most popular locations. Both are prime surfing, water skiing and sailing territory, and are also becoming rather popular with the celebrity crowd ever since Princes Harry and William learnt to water ski in this area.
Blackpool expects a boom next year when they take a ride on the big dipper! Jolly wot, Rock is home to yacht clubs and water ski clubs galore, and along with Polzeath and the glorious sand dune backed flat sands of Daymer Bay in-between the two resorts this area of the North Cornwall coast offers some of the best sailing and water skiing facilities in Cornwall.
Whilst Rock is more of a sailing, yachting and water skiing haunt, head to Polzeath for top surfing! Watch out for the crowds at Polzeath beach in high season, as this beach is one of the top surfing beaches in Cornwall! There are breaks all along this stunning Cornwall surfing beach, and facilities here are excellent with a car park, toilets, a surf school and surf gear hire outlets, and a full lifeguard service in the summer season.
Certainly the beach to be 'seen' on! The growing resort of Polzeath, still laid back though and certainly not as full on as Newquay, backs right onto the beach so ample restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops are all easily accessed - one of the reasons why this is a popular all round beach for both surfers and families. No dogs allowed on Polzeath Beach!
Padstow Bay Walking
Coastal walking around the Trevose Head and Padstow Bay coastline is spectacular indeed. You've a mix of themes too, with wonderful birdwatching opportunities around the estuary and wild headland walking passed the Trevose Lighthouse. Hook into some guided walks through Padstow Tourist Information centre.
One specific guided walk offered, with RSPB representative, is the Trevose Head guided walk. Highly recommended, particularly for birdwatchers, Trevose Head is truly a spectacular headland, and offers views all the way down to Newquay on clear days. There's a lighthouse up here too, and the coastal wildlife and wildflowers along this coastline are not to be missed.
One of the most spectacular headlands in Cornwall Trevose Head, tipped by the archetypal white lighthouse, is a wonderful location to enjoy scenery and coastal wildlife. Wildflowers include golden samphire and rock sea lavender, both of which cling to the cliffs around Trevose. Out to sea, sharks have sometimes been spotted. This area around Trevose is renowned as host to the uncommon farmland bird, the Corn Bunting. You're likely to see some if you hook into the guided walk which meets at the Quarry Car Park.
