Eden Project Cornwall Tourist Information Visiting

Described as a 'Living theatre of plants and people', and situated on what was an old crater left by an old working pit, the Eden Project with it's two vast biomes and outdoor biome is one of the most visited attractions in the UK! The biomes have caught the public's imagination, certainly a lot more than London's vacant dome! Part of the reason for it's success is no doubt it's intent - an educational charitable trust for all with a mission to open visitors eyes, in the words of Tim Smith, key driver of the project with a history in such things, having renovated the Lost Gardens of Heligan before the Eden project,

The Trusts interests lie in explaining how the natural world works seen through the lens of plants, exploring how people might best organise themselves in the face of this knowledge and thereby reach an understanding of what sustainability might mean and, through best practice of these principles, create an organisation that is sustainable to act as a model for others. (Tim Smit, CEO).

Visiting the Eden Project

Visitors to the Eden Project are in for a treat. Two vast biomes or giant greenhouses, one a humid tropics biome and one a warm temperatures region. Also open to visitors is an area referred to as the outdoor biome, which contains more hardy plants including local Cornwall plants. Inside both biomes is indeed a celebration of nature, with plants jostling for place and care for the environment explored through not just exhibitions of plants but through artwork, lectures, storytelling, workshops and events including music events.

The Humid Tropics Biome is the largest at 240m long, 50m high and 110m wide. Trees in here, reaching upto the light, include species from the Amazon Rainforests. In total there are over 1000 plant species, with successful growth sustained since the Eden Project opened in 2001. It gets hot in here, so for visitor comfort there are plenty of sit down areas, plus drinking fountains around the Biome, with exit at Malaysian House, plus a cool room in the West Africa area for any emergencies. Expect to see such diverse plants as Rubber Trees, Cola - an African tree which contains caffeine rich seeds, a selection of palm trees and a range of Tropical Fruit plants including Mango, banana, and pineapples.

The Warm Temperature Biome is a little smaller, and is crammed with plants from the western sides of continents situated between 30û40? N or S latitude. These include regions such as California, The Med and South Africa - areas which have hot dry summers and cool wet winters. In this biome expect to see the fruits of the Mediterranean, the Citrus family, Grape Vines, Tobacco, Olives and beautiful scented plants used by the perfume industry.

The Outdoor Landscape at the Eden Project will be more familiar to visitors, covering our own regions - with a particular Cornwall plant focus here, as well as the cooler regions of America, the Indian foothills and Russia. There's a lot of area to cover on foot in the outdoor landscape area or outdoor biome, so for those visitors seeking a leisurely view, hop on the land train which starts from the visitors centre. Expect to see in this area Cornish crops like potatoes, a choice of garden flowers, all the ingredients for beer including wheat and hops accompanied by Reece Ingram fab sculptures, and a selection of ancient plants, plus plants used as part of Cornish folklore and myth.

Eden Project Facilities

Special marked trails such as the Asian Trail are an extra bonus, picking out themes in the biomes - well worth hooking into that. Facilities at the Eden Project incorporate event hosting, with increasingly music events taking place here, plus seasonal thematic events such as 'Bulb Mania', naturally in spring with all things tulip, daff and Hyacinths! Check the website link right for a list of events throughout the year. The likes of Goldfrapp, Snow Patrol and The Magic Numbers are performing here at the Eden Project!

The Eden Project can also host your corporate event or do! There's a professional Events Management team on-site to assist, plus The Morocco Red Brasserie and Indigo Cafe, with the large Gallery Function area. All with impressive views as you can imagine of the biomes. Conferences with a difference start here at the Eden Project!

A range of artists have worked on the Eden Project, so as you wander around you'll notice magical sculptures, painted mural walls, mosaics, stone carvings, cartoons and more! Cornwall certainly isn't short on cutting edge contemporary artists, and much of the artwork here at the Eden Project is by Cornish artists. A visual feast indeed, as are the Lost Gardens of Heligan, another project with the hands of Tim Smit upon it, and with a similar style of blending plants with creative works of art - magic!

The Eden Project caters well for schools too, with workshops and special events offered. School trips are common at the Eden Project and day trips are becoming increasingly popular. Science and Schools Educational Projects, often linked to the curriculum are offered - check the Eden Project weblink right for details.
